Luiz Escañuela (São Caetano do Sul, 1993) is a visual artist who lives and works in São Paulo. His practice engages with the historical cartography of Brazil and produces images in which the map is invaded by the body and by matter.
Over historical maps of Brazil, Escañuela models cold ceramic into tendons, veins and arteries, or opens the lines by etching them into scrap iron and carbon steel plates that he then leaves to oxidize. These operations are inscribed onto the documents that organized territory, delimited ownership and recorded expedition routes, binding them to materials so that they take on a new body. The diagram, a system of representation that claims neutrality, passes into the field of organic unpredictability, where the drawing follows the will of the support, of corrosion, rust, mass and paint.
What guides the work as a whole is the overlaying of two orders: the weight of matter upon the macro scale of the official map, of geopolitics and history. Each is read through the other. Body and map alternate as starting points, inscribing skin onto territory and territory onto skin in a counter-cartographic gesture in which the territory reveals itself as an organism crossed by flows that are at once geographic and sanguineous. Between one end and the other, the same operation: to strip the map of its aseptic function as record and return it to what reacts, under the perspective of a living, arterial and untameable cartography.
He has held the solo exhibitions Não Se Esqueça do Que É Épico (2022, critical text by Victor Gorgulho) and Disrupto (2019), at Galeria Luis Maluf, and the two-person shows Corpo em bruma (2025, with Lucas Milano, curated by Jessica Factor) and Carne, Pele, Luz e Metal (2023, with Leandra Espírito Santo, curated by Agnaldo Farias). He took part in the 19th Salão Nacional de Arte at MAC Jataí (2022) and, in 2026, in the Brazilian Architecture Biennial, at the Pavilhão das Culturas Brasileiras, and in the group show O elã da trama, at Apartamento 61, curated by Mariane Beline, Iara Pimenta and Anita Goes. He was artist in residence at the Museu de Santos in 2022, in a program held for the Bicentennial of Brazilian Independence, and a finalist of the Prisma Art Prize, in Rome, with the work Dorsal Mesoatlântica. He was listed in Forbes Under 30 in 2019 and has had works published in Casa Vogue, DASARTES and Veja.
